Portovenere is situated in the Gulf of La Spezia, also called "Poets’ Gulf", because formerly famous poets like Shelley and Byron loved to stay there, but also Italian authors like Montale and Mario Soldati or the journalist and author Arrigo Petacco who lives at Portovenere.

A religious ceremony can be arranged in one of the two churches of Portovenere: San Lorenzo in the upper part of the village or San Pietro right on the rocks above the sea.
